Last weekend I had the honour of covering Algoma University’s Convocation Gala and Ceremony. For those of you who don’t know I’m an Algoma Alum graduating with my BA in Computer Science in 2005 – GEEKS REPRESENT! I assumed I would be sweeping all of the awards and accolades that they throw out at these convocations since I left but to this point I’m still empty handed. I have the space on my wall for about 10 or so Honorary Degrees! But less about me and more about now. On the Friday night I was able to cover the Convocation Gala which was a formal event held in the ballroom at the Comfort Suites; the Saturday was the big Ceremony day held down on the Sault’s waterfront at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion – Bryan was along to help capture this event with me.
The graduating students were pretty well behaved. There was the face painted guy and then there was the dude who Tebowed – unfortunately both Bryan and I missed it. And to anyone who I may have yelled at from the top of a ladder – well what do you expect when they give me a giant ladder to yell from?
To the 169 students who graduated congratulations! You’ve made a huge step but your journey is far from over. You’re educated and that’s the key, things you’ve learned, even those stupid things you think you had no use for when your prof was babbling on about them will become useful at some point. And just because you have a degree in a certain field of study don’t let that stop you from opening other doors and following new dreams that may appear.
That is some height to throw a hat!! Congrats, smart people!
You did a fantastic job! Wow!
